Homs-Hama water canal re-launched to irrigate 21 thousand hectares

Homs, SANA- Prime Minster, Hussein Arnous, inaugurated on Saturday Homs-Hama water canal to irrigate 21 thousand hectares of agricultural lands.

The canal has been rehabilitated after 10-year suspension by acts of terrorist organizations.

In a statement to journalists, Arnous said that re-launching of Homs-Hama water canal aims to delivering water to irrigate lands and divert them from rain-fed to irrigated crops , which contributes to improving and increasing production ,and reducing costs to farmers.

The canal will provide the irrigation water to more than 20 thousand hectares of agriculture lands in Homs and Hama, Arnous said.

He affirmed that the government is currently focusing on two basic issues. The first is for production process at the levels of agriculture, industrial, crafts production, small enterprises, and small and micro industries to secure self-sufficiency, in addition to securing production requirements.

Arnous pointed out to great efforts made by the government to secure fertilizer and fuel, noting that, by the end of the week, there will be improvement in the issue of oil derivatives.

For his part, Director of Water Resources in Homs, Ismail Ismail said that the cost of rehabilitating the canal amounted to more than 1,400 billion Syrian pounds ,adding that the canal will irrigate Homs and Hama plains with a total area of 21,000 hectares.

“The canal irrigates agricultural lands in which more than 50,000 families work, and it enables farmers to invest their lands in a way that contributes to increasing production and improving the livelihood standard of people in the region” Ismail affirmed.
