Reception at the Indian Embassy in Damascus on occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday

Damascus, SANA-Indian Embassy in Damascus held a reception on the occasion of anniversary of Mahamta Ghandi’s day of birth at Dama Rose hotel in Damascus.

In a speech during the ceremony, Indian Ambassador in Damascus Dr. Hifzur Rahman pointed out that the principles of Ghandi are based on two main pillars; the power of honesty and nonviolence, a power which is principled on honesty, harmony and tolerance which have nothing to do with deception and hatred.

The Ambassador clarified that “Ghandi is always present to remind us with the strength of honesty, love and peace through his assertion that non-violence is the weapon of the brave men,” referring that Ghandi’s perceptions paved the way for respecting the others despite of their belonging .

He lauded the Syrians’ influence by Ghandi and their appreciation for him, stressing India’s persistence to go on with the humanitarian projects, of which “India for Humanity” project for fitting the prosthesis sponsored by the Indian Embassy in Damascus which was able to draw a smile and delight  the faces of 500 Syrian families.

For his part, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Dr. Fayssal Mikdad, said that Ghandi’s heritage is for all the human beings because by his invitation for tolerance and solving the problems by peaceful means, he led the struggle for the independence in a way that resulted in achieving the goals of the Indian people, thus he became an example to be followed by peoples of the world.

Mikdad added that Syria’s approach towards the East includes aspects of civilization, culture and science, affirming that Syria, through its war on terrorism, shares intellectually and culturally with what has been realized by the Indian people regarding its peaceful struggle for the independence.

The UN dedicated Mahamta Ghandi’s day of birth on October 2nd 1869 as an International Day for non – Violence which is marked every year.
