Lavrov: US illegitimate presence in Syria contributes to instability in it

Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated the need for solving the crisis in Syria based on the UN Security Council resolution no.2254, noting that the US illegitimate presence in Syria contributes to instability in the country.

Lavrov remarks’ came during a joint press conference with his Omani counterpart Yusuf bin Alawi in Moscow on Monday.

“We share stance on Syria,” Lavrov said. “The Security Council Resolution 2254 has no alternative, it should be fully implemented and in this context we informed our interlocutors about the efforts taken in this direction by the countries-guarantors of the Astana format – Russia, Iran and Turkey – including the outcome of the February 14 summit of the Astana trio in Sochi.”

Lavrov indicated that the illegal US presence in Syria is contributing to instability and impeding reaching a political settlement in the country.

Lavrov said that the US is illegally present in al-Tanf area as it trains the terrorists under its control who carry out terrorist acts in all the Syrian territory and prevent the displaced Syrians from leaving al-Rukban Camp.

“We, along with the Syrian government, are calling for this to take place. But the United States and the extremists under their control who control this camp prohibit people from leaving,” Lavrov said , calling for the representatives of the UN, who recently accompanied the second humanitarian aid convoy, to “see that everything is far from being in order” at the camp, and report back on their findings to the UN Security Council.

For his part, bin Alawi pointed out to the necessity of finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria, referring to Russia’s role in solving the crisis in the country and contributing to the return of all the displaced Syrians back to their homeland.
