UN Security Council condemns attacks launched by terrorist organizations in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon as major threat to the region

New York, SANA-UN Security Council called for enhancing and expanding support to Iraq in the face of so-called the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS) and the armed organizations affiliated with it.

In a statement adopted by the Council during a ministerial meeting on Iraq held on Friday with the participation of forty countries, the Council condemned “The attacks launched by terrorist organizations in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon including the ISIS,” affirming that this large-scale attack is a major threat to the region.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari said “Some of the interposition deviated from the provision under consideration, which is the situation in Iraq, as it is stated in the agenda, talking about the situation in Syria in a wrong and provocative way which is not suitable at all, particularly with regards to combating the ISIS.” 1

In a statement during the meeting, al-Jaafari added “I have listened carefully to the opening statement delivered by US Secretary of State John Kerry who chaired the session, and I found in its content a responsible and balanced language that is up to the importance of what is taking place in Iraq at the hands of the ISIS and other terrorist organizations.”

Al-Jaafari indicated that some of the deliberations regrettably sought to distract the attention from the main issue discussed during the session which is helping the Iraqi and Syrian governments and peoples confront the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations affiliated with them according to Resolution No. 2170.

“The Syrian government is a key part of combating the terrorism of the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra,” al-Jaafari stressed, adding ” We have worked alone in Syria on combating this terrorism over the past three years, and we have always insisted on the importance of combating it and halting its financing and armament or training its members”.

Al-Jaafari indicated that Syria is very pleased that the international community acknowledged the existence of terrorism which is backed by some governments and mass media and that there are camps for training terrorists, some of which are in Syria’s neighboring countries, adding that the identity of those who back terrorism is intentionally hidden.

He affirmed that combating terrorism must be done in the framework of the UN charter and the principles of the international law, on top of which respecting the sovereignty of the countries which definitely requires previous coordination with the Syrian government in any serious effort to combat terrorism.

“Facing terrorism in an effective way requires facing its mental sources which have been built on the Saudi Wahhabi mentality that has been a main source of extremism in the Islamic and Arab world,” Al-Jaafari said. Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari underlined the importance of fighting terrorism as an international epidemic; calling for more cooperation among all countries to achieve this goal as the danger of terrorism doesn’t only threaten Iraq and Syria, but the region and the world.

He said “We believe that the main responsibility to fight the ISIS and other terrorist organizations in Iraq is our responsibility.

However, we require the support of friendly countries in providing air cover,” he said. He underlined the necessity of obliging all countries with resolution No. 2170 of the Security Council.

Russia’s Permanent Representative at the UN Vitaly Churkin said that any airstrike against the terrorist organization ISIS on Syrian territories without coordination with the Syrian government would constitute a serious violation of the basic principles of international law and may have devastating effects on the situation in Syria, including the humanitarian situation.

Churkin stressed that confronting ISIS or al-Nusra Front must be carried out according to the principles of the UN, international law, and full cooperation with the region’s countries, asserting that any other steps would be illegal and would undermine regional peace and stability.

Permanent Representative of China to the UN Liu Jieyi, said that the new terrorist threat represented by ISIS on the International peace and security raises deep concern. He called on the international community to support Iraq in the face of terrorism and achieve the political reconciliation which was started by forming new government.

The Chinese official demanded the international community to respect sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Iraq and other states in the region, and commit to the principles of the UN Charter and norms governing the international relations and to allow the United Nations and Security Council to play their assumed role.

While Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that ISIS organization is not a state and not an Islamic but it is a terrorist organization emerged from the womb of chaos backed by a number of the region’s states and foreign sides. ” Any strategy to defeat terrorism must fully comply with the international law standards and principles and UN Charter regarding any military action against the terrorists organizations whether in Iraq or Syria”.
