Al-Jaafari: Terrorists plot for wide-scale chlorine gas attack to accuse the Syrian Arab army of it

New York, SANA – Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Bashar al-Jaafari, said that the Syrian government had information that terrorists are planning for a wide-scale terrorist attack with chlorine gas to accuse the Syrian Arab army of it.

Speaking at the UN Security Council’s meeting on Wednesday, al-Jaafari added that terrorists have strict instructions from western and Turkish intelligence agencies to fabricate a terrorist attack with chlorine gas before March 13th, the date on which the 87th session of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will be convened.

The Syrian diplomat added that he had information that three Turkish trucks loaded with Chlorine gas entered Idleb province through Bab al-Hawa border-crossing on February 20th, two of them are now in a school in Qalb Lawza village which they turned into a center of chemical storage while the third truck is in a center for the so-called Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham in al-Habet village in the northern countryside of Idleb.

He said that the Syrian government has read the 48th monthly report submitted by the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and sent two official letters to the UN Secretary General and the Chairman of the UN Security Council clarifying its attitude with regard to the current report.

Al-Jaafari said that the United Nations has failed to implement its Charter and the principles of international law since its inception which is clearly shown in the Palestinian cause, in addition to other failures in Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia, Grenada and Nicaragua.

He reaffirmed Syria’s firm commitment to the principles of international and humanitarian laws as well as the Syrian constitution and rules which stipulate for that the Syrian government is responsible for guaranteeing the safety and security of its citizens against the terrorist groups.

Al-Jaafari indicated that the current report, just like the previous ones, relies on open politicized sources and inaccurate figures, meantime, it still ignores confidential governmental sources as well as the reports submitted by the UN representatives operating in Syria which hail the efforts exerted by the Syrian government and appreciate its cooperation in the humanitarian field and the facilitations it provided to help them perform their mission.

He stressed Syria’s denunciation of the silence of those who prepared the report, the UN Commission on Human Rights and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) after the adoption of UNSC Resolution No. 2401 towards the barbaric Turkish aggression on Afrin area which caused significant property damage, human casualties and sharp shortage in humanitarian needs.

Al-Jaafari  added that Syria rejects the continued silence towards the catastrophic consequences of the US-led international coalition’s military operations and massacres which claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians and members of Syrian popular forces which fight Daesh terrorists, the latest of which are two massacres in Deir Ezzor countryside.

He renewed Syria’s calls for dissolving the illegitimate US-led international coalition and putting an immediate end to its crimes against Syrian civilians, adding that a statement issued by the General Staff of the Russian Army on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in areas held by the US agents and allies in Syria described it to be the worst in the country.

Regarding the situation in Eastern Ghouta area, al-Jaafari said that the Syrian government stressed that the situation has got worse there due to the attacks carried out by terrorist groups on residential neighborhoods and military positions as they fired more than 2180 rocket and mortar shells on Damascus city, claiming the lives of over 66 civilians and injuring 474 others which required  the governmental forces to respond to these attacks in order to perform the Syrian state’s constitutional duty in guaranteeing the safety and security of its citizens.

He expressed condemnation of those who prepared the report for overlooking the fact that the families in the Eastern Ghouta are besieged from inside by the armed terrorist groups which use them as human shields and take the humanitarian aid and distribute them to their members and the suffering of thousands of abductees who have been tortured in their jails, referring to civilians abducted by terrorists in Adra Workers’ City and Lattakia countryside.

He said that the Syrian government has taken all necessary measures to protect its citizens in terms of retaliating against terrorist attacks and helping Syrian civilians flee terrorism through a humanitarian corridor established for this purpose, in addition to providing temporary housing centers and offering necessary medical care and basic food materials at the Syrian government expense.

Al-Jaafari added that the Syrian State called on members of armed groups to lay down their arms, halt their terrorist practices and engage in national reconciliation initiatives. On contrast, these terrorist organizations, on the top of which Jabhat al-Nusra, Jaish al-Islam and Faylaq al-Rahman prevented civilians from reaching the corridor and targeted it with mortar shells.

He noted that the real objective of UNSC Resolution No. 2401 is not to reach a real truce as some parties claim, or protect civilians and meet their needs, rather it is meant to use the UN Security Council to hinder the progress made by the Syrian Arab army and its allies against terrorist groups which pose threat to the capital, Damascus.

The propaganda launched regarding the humanitarian situation in the Eastern Ghouta was accompanied by the chemical weapons media propaganda sponsored by the US and some western states, he stated

The Syrian diplomat stressed that those states which have influence on armed terrorist groups in the Eastern Ghouta and other Syrian areas should hold the responsibility for the cessation of hostilities, force these terrorists to end their practices and enable civilians to leave the area safely.
