De Mistura welcomes Russian support of his initiative for humanitarian pause in Aleppo

Moscow, SANA – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura welcomed Russian support of his initiative to introduce a pause of at least 48 hours to deliver UN humanitarian aid to the Syrian city of Aleppo, de Mistura’s office in Geneva said Thursday.

The Special Envoy welcomes the Russian Federation’s statement, said Jessy Chahine, press spokeswoman for de Mistura, adding that the United Nations humanitarian team is now set to mobilize itself to respond to this challenge as the plan is to jointly study the details of the operation and prepare for the aid delivery once it is possible.

Russian Defense Ministry earlier expressed its support for de Mistura’s suggestion and its spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said that Russia suggests sending humanitarian convoys to both the western parts of Aleppo, controlled by the Syrian army, and the eastern neighborhoods held by the terrorist organizations.
