Within the event, dubbed “Our Country Is Our Responsibility”, the activities included cleaning up roads and streets, embellishing parks and helping traffic policemen and bakery workers.

SANA spoke to some of the participants and their supervisors, who said their and others’ volunteering work reflects the Syrians’ determination to defy the challenges imposed on them under the ongoing crisis.

“Volunteer work shows a sublime side of humanity. It encourages action and achieving, which would reflect positively on all aspects of life,” said Amjad Ali from Damascus Volunteer Team.

Volunteers, who included university students, highlighted the importance of putting more efforts that are necessary for the coming stage when post-crisis reconstruction process is launched.

Several humanitarian, official and civil organizations participated in the volunteer activities, including the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, the National Union of Syrian Students, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, in addition to many charity and society-oriented associations.

Marked on December 5 of every year, the International Volunteer Day aims to make sure that voluntary engagement and the volunteers’ efforts do not go unnoticed.

It is also a chance for volunteer-involving organizations to work with UN and government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups and the private sector and merge their activities with development programs.

Established in 2007, The Syria Trust for Development is an NGO that supports and sponsors social initiatives via partnerships with civil society organizations and individuals, focusing on development and social issues and working to promote business pioneering and volunteer work.
