New York, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the situation in Syria with foreign ministers of the five permanent member states “P5” of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that the talks, which took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, gave special attention to the situation in Syria in light of the increasing terror threat by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the region.

The statement noted that the Russian side emphasized the necessity of forming a wide front based solidly on the international law for facing terrorists that would involve all those who are making real contribution in this regard, including the Syrian armed forces.

China: Permanent Five should unite to politically solve crisis in Syria

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called upon the P5  to unit and seize the opportunity to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

“The P5 should unite and seize the opportunity to politically solve the Syrian crisis as the parties are showing more willingness to do so,” said Wang during the same meeting.

He called for considering the convening of Geneva 3 conference at an appropriate time and actively creating the conditions conducive to the opening of such a conference.

“Progress on the political solution in Syria will contribute to greater synergy on anti-terrorism efforts of all sides,” said Wang.

He added that dialogues between the Syrian parties should be encouraged and the mediation efforts by UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, in particular, should be supported so as to have a consensus reached among the Syrian parties.
