Foreign Ministry’s committee on implementing CWC: Last shipment of chemical materials transported outside Syria

Damascus, SANA – An official source at the Syrian National Committee for Implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention at the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry announced that on Monday June 23, 2014, the last shipment of chemical material was transported outside the Syrian Arab Republic.

In a statement to SANA, the source said that while Syria has carried out this humanitarian commitment despite difficult security conditions and being subjected to a terrorist onslaught targeting Syria and its people, this massive undertaking could not have been carried out in record time had it not been for the decisive political will of President Bashar al-Assad, the initiative carried out by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the monumental efforts exerted by the Syrian authorities to transport the chemical materials to the Syrian coast.

The source asserted that this major achievement constitutes further proof that Syria carries out its international obligations and all that it pledges to do in a serious and responsible manner.

The source concluded by saying that this achievement, which is a success for Syria, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and the United Nations, will open the door for calling on the international committee to force Israel to join international agreements on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, making the Middle East free of all WMDs including Israel’s nuclear, chemical, and biological arsenal.
