Condemning systematic destruction of Syrian archeology, UNWTO calls for prompt measures to save the world cultural heritage

Damascus, SANA – The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) renewed Monday its condemnation of the systematic destruction committed by the terrorist organizations of the antiquities and the archeological sites in Syria.

UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, stressed in a phone call with Tourism Minister, Bishr Yazigi that the Organization, on behalf of the world tourism community, joins UNESCO in condemning the systematic destruction of archeology, pointing out the need for adopting prompt measures for saving the world cultural heritage.

Al-Rifai called upon the international community to take a unified stance in condemning these terrorist atrocities, stressing that the diverse world cultural heritage narrates the story of the human kind and brings a feeling of dignity and self-confidence to the local communities as it also encourages people to travel and discover the world.

The two sides discussed means of cooperation between the Organization and the Ministry in the fields of building manpower and providing consultative expertise to contribute to bringing Syria back to the tourism map with the aim of promoting its distinctive cultural identity.

UNWTO condemned earlier the systematic destruction of the Syrian tourism and archeology in a statement issued on its website.
