NEW York, SANA- Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh affirmed that the countries that provided support to terrorist organizations in Syria and enabled them to possess and use weapons and toxic chemicals must be held accountable.
Sabbgh’s remarks came during a session of the UN Security Council on Syria on Friday.
Sabbagh stressed that achieving the universality of the Chemical Weapons Convention will remain elusive as long as there are those who continue to provide immunity to Israel and its arsenal of chemical weapons and other weapons of mass destruction that pose a serious threat to peace.
Sabbagh added that implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention has faced serious challenges as a result of the United States’ procrastination in complying with its obligations by destroying its stockpiles of chemical weapons within the deadlines set for it, in addition to what this agreement has been subjected to in recent years from manipulating its provisions and the politicization of its goals by the governments of some Western countries.
Syria has fully cooperated with Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and has fulfilled its obligations under the agreement, the Ambassador added.
Syria has repeatedly provided the 1540 Committee of the Security Council and the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons with information about the attempts of the terrorist organizations (ISIS) and the al-Nusra and other entities associated with them to obtain chemical weapons and toxic chemicals and their attempts to use them against the Syrians, including their preparations to carry out fabricated plays about the implementation of chemical attacks with the aim of accusing the Syrian Arab Army of them.
Sabbagh indicated that Syria’s delegation to the United Nations recently conveyed information about the possession of Jabhat al-Nusra organization with toxic chemicals and missiles modified to contain toxic materials in Idleb province, in coordination with the Turkish regime forces, in preparation for the fabrication of a chemical accident.
Sabbagh pointed out Syria’s keenness to hold high-level meeting between the Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad and the Director-General of the organization as soon as possible in order to address all issues related to the work of the organization’s teams according to a specific and comprehensive agenda that allows achieving tangible progress on them.
“Syria welcomes the visit of the declaration’s evaluation team to hold the 25th round of consultations, and it is ready to receive this team, except one member who is not professional or neutral” , Sabbagh said.
Sabbagh expressed Syria’s deep concern over the delay in the fact-finding mission in completing its reports about the incidents that Syria requested to investigate regarding the use of chemical weapons by terrorist groups, as there have been incidents reported by Syria for more than five years and this mission has not submitted reports on them so far.
