Sabbagh: Suffering of Syrian people continues due to Western countries’ practices

New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, has affirmed that the suffering of the Syrian people continues as a result of the practices of Western countries whose interests and agendas have dominated over the lives of Syrians, security and stability of the region.

He added that improving the humanitarian situation requires lifting illegitimate coercive measures, ending foreign occupation of Syrian lands, and halting support for terrorist organizations and separatist militias.

Sabbagh, in a session of the Security Council on Friday, said that the Syrian state exerts effort to improve the humanitarian situation, provide basic needs and services, rebuild what has been destroyed by terrorism, return Syria to the path of sustainable development and ensure the return of the displaced to their homes and their normal lives.

He added that those efforts face major obstacles that limit the achievement of their desired results due to wrong policies and blatant violations of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, including the imposition of unilateral coercive measures committed by Western countries.

Regarding the political situation, Sabbagh clarified that the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, visited Syria last week and held talks with Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad and Head of the Committee of discussing the constitution, Ahmad al-Kizbari, as Pedersen was briefed with all the significant steps that have been achieving in the domain of reconciliation and settlement processes in Daraa ,Deir Ezzor, Hassaka and the liberated areas of Raqqa province which have enabled a large number of Syrians to return to their normal life ,in addition to the amnesty decrees which are a very significant step that must be considered.

“ Syria is committed to the political solution based on Syrian-Syrian dialogue owned and led by Syria and under the full commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”, Sabbagh said.

He also underlined the importance of implementing the context of the reference paper that regulates works of the committee and not to disregard its provisions under any context, highlighting that the committee’s work is an exclusive right for Syrians and that the external sides have no right to interfere , hinder or impose timetables or pre-summaries for its results.
