Al-Moallem meets UN Secretary-General, Cuban, Ecuadorian FMs in New York

New York, SANA-Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem met on Saturday the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his Cuban and Ecuadorian counterparts on the sidelines of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.

During the meeting,  al-Moallem briefed Ki-moon on the latest developments in Syria, affirming that the UN Secretary General’s role is to observe the principles of the UN Charter that calls for respecting the sovereignty of nations and non-interference in their internal affairs.

Furthermore, Minister al-Moallem underlined the role of the UN in compelling its member states to implement the UN Security Council counterterrorism resolutions, particularly

Resolution 2178 that calls for drying out the sources of terrorism.

Talks during the meeting also dealt with the mission of the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and the support needed to make his mission work away from foreign intervention.

Al-Moallem added that training, arming and funding what is called “moderate opposition” will only prolong the crisis and obstruct a political solution.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister met the Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino.

During the meeting, al-Moallem elaborated on the regional events and developments, especially the crimes of terrorist organizations in the region, stressing the necessity of pressuring the countries baking them to cease their support.

Al-Moallem stressed the necessity for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations as stated by the UN Charter and international law.

Any acts that breach the sovereignty of nations are impermissible, he added, warning that the countries taking part the anti-terrorism alliance might have different ulterior agendas.

The two ministers, for their part, vowed to convey the true image of the Syrian situation to the Latin America countries.
